THIS
MONTH'S FUN FACT
 |
|
August is get ready for Kindergarten Month
Kindergarten (German, literally means "children's garden) is a
classroom program that consists of children ages three to seven
years of age. The programs range from half days to full
days of school depending on the availability of the school
system. For most children this is the first step towards
developing social skills in a group setting without the
assistance of mom or dad. Most kindergartens share the
objectives of teaching social skills, self-esteem and developing
a child's academic ability.
There was a kindergarten in Watertown, Wisconsin, founded by
Margaret Schurz in 1856. Elizabeth Peabody had established one
in Boston in 1873. But the first kindergarten in the world was
founded by a man named Friedrich Froebel. Friedrich Froebel was
known as the "Father of
Kindergarten" because he developed the first kindergarten in
Germany in 1837. His kindergarten developed theories and
practices that are still being used today in kindergarten
classrooms. His ideas were that children need to have play time
in order to learn. Kindergarten
should be a place for children to grow and learn from their
social interaction with other children.
Friedrich Froebel wrote a book based on his theories and
practices concerning the kindergarten environment. The book was
burned by the
German community. They did not believe children needed to play
in order to learn. They thought his theories were outrageous.
The first kindergarten was established to help children of
poverty and who had special needs. "Many nurseries at this time
would coincide with the kindergartens which were run by the
philanthropically minded women in order to serve the families of
the poor". These
nurseries/kindergartens would stress the systematic play of
Froebel's philosophy. Through systematic play the children are
able to learn to
discriminate, analyze, share and solve problems.
In 1872, kindergartens gained support from the National
Education Association, which in 1884 established a department of
kindergarten
instruction. Through the efforts of many people the kindergarten
has worked its way into many schools, private and public.

This month's Windows Tip :
Tile Selected Windows
This tip works in Windows XP and Windows Vista, though the
command is somewhat different in XP than Vista.
There are times when you need to work with data from two
different programs. To see more than one open program at a time,
you can right-click in an empty space on the Windows taskbar and
select Show Windows Side by Side (Tile Windows Horizontally in
XP) or Show Windows Stacked (Tile Windows Vertically in XP).
This is fine if the only programs open are the two that you're
interested in; but it's less useful when you have a dozen apps
running.
To tile just a subset of your open programs (at least in Windows
XP), click on the taskbar button for the first program you want
to tile, then Ctrl-click on the button for the second program
you want to be able to see. Both taskbar buttons should remain
selected. Right-click on the second taskbar button and select
Tile Windows Horizontally or Tile Windows Vertically.

Eliminate the Complexity and
Burden of Sales Tax.
New Sage Sales Tax for MAS 90 and MAS 200 - Powered by
AvaTaxSales tax management is a complex and tedious
activity that is a significant burden to many organizations.
With more than 12,500 tax regions throughout North American
alone—and constantly changing jurisdictional boundaries, rates
and taxability rules—it’s virtually impossible for most
businesses to keep up. Yet it’s a compulsory activity; you are
required to do it by law. Any time and money spent on sales tax
compliance and related activities is, by nature, non-revenue
generating. So even if you invest the
time and resources to get it 100% right and are bullet-proof in
an audit, you’ve still lost the time and productivity that went
into getting there.
By leveraging the power of automation, Sage Sales Tax for
Sage MAS 90, MAS 200 and MAS 500 can eliminate the tedious work
and complexity associated with calculating, collecting,
reporting on and remitting taxes in multiple
jurisdictions—reducing the risk of penalty in an audit while
saving money and improving organizational productivity. Recently
introduced by Sage Software, this new feature of your MAS 90 or
MAS 200 system enables you to take an automated approach to
sales tax management with very little training and no change to
your current sales order and/or invoice processing procedures.
